XVI Feria del Caballo Arabe del Ecuador

El 1 y 2 de Junio, la XVI Feria del Caballo Árabe del Ecuador– Copa Corporación Maresa – tuvo lugar por primera vez en las instalaciones de la Escuela de Equitación San Jorge, ubicada en el valle de Sangolquí. A 2400 metros de altura, esa localidad situada a 20 kilómetros de Quito es famosa por su folklor y tradición ecuestres. En ese ambiente cálido y amigable, los caballos en su mayoría nacidos en el Ecuador se lucieron como jamás antes frente a un numeroso público compuesto tanto de aficionados a la raza árabe como de amantes del caballo en general.

XVI Arabian Horse National Championship of Ecuador

On the 1st and 2nd of June 2013, the Ecuadorian Association of Arabian Horse Breeders (ACCAE) organized its XVI National Championship - Copa Corporación Maresa - combining Show and Sport classes. The event took place for the first time in Sangolquí, a valley nearby Quito -the capital of Ecuador - located at 2.400 meters of altitude and famous for its folklore and equestrian tradition. In a warm and friendly environment, Arabian horses born in Ecuador or imported showed greatly in front of a large audience composed of both local and international experts.

Luego de semanas de lluvia, el sol volvió a aparecer para calentar las canchas floreadas del Club San Jorge, donde más de 70 caballos árabes compitieron por su belleza y aptitud deportiva. Mientras que en el área VIP, los 45 socios de la Asociación de Criadores de Caballos Arabes del Ecuador, ACCAE, y sus invitados recibieron una atención personalizada, el resto del público pudo pasear entre las carpas de los auspiciantes, los puestos de comida y juegos infantiles.

En la cancha principal, los jueces brasileños Luiz Rocco y Reinaldo da Rocha Leão, así como Susan Martín de los Estados Unidos, cumplieron su función con gran profesionalismo y ética a pesar de la dificultad y delicadeza de su tarea, debidas tanto a la gran calidad de los caballos como a la experticia de los presentadores oriundos en su mayoría de Brasil.

El máximo ganador de la Feria fue el Criadero Santa Cecilia, que por segundo año consecutivo se llevó los Premios al Mejor Criador y al Mejor Expositor del Concurso Morfológico. Por su parte, el criadero Medrano ganó el Premio al Mejor Criadero para Pruebas Deportivas. Y finalmente, Carlos Larrea, nuevo criador y socio de la ACCAE, se llevó el Premio Incentivo Expositor.

In Ecuador, the equestrian tradition goes back to the colonization of the continent by the Spaniards and Arabian Horse blood can be traced within the Ecuadorian herds which probably came during that period of time together with Andalusian and Barbs horses. Nevertheless, no straight lines were maintained and it is only during the second part of the XIXth century that pure bloodlines were established in Ecuador. Nowadays, about 900 pure Arabians are registered in the Ecuadorian Stud Book, of which 77% were born in the country.

Once a year, the ACCAE organizes the Arabian Horse National Championship, which reached its 16th edition during the first weekend of June. This year, more than 70 horses participated at the event, 60 of them entering the Show competition judged by Reinaldo da Rocha Leão and Luiz Rocco, from Brazil, as well as Susan Martin from the USA. Judges played their role with great professionalism and ethics despite the difficulty and delicacy of their task, due both to the high quality of horses as to the expertise of US and Brazilian handlers.

The top winner of the National Championship was the stud farm Santa Cecilia, which for the second consecutive year won the Best Breeder and Best Exhibitor Awards of the Halter Competition, while Medrano won the Award of the Best Sport Stud Farm and Carlos Larrea, the New Exhibitor Award.

En el Concurso Morfológico, el imponente padrillo Maarjan (Marwan Al Shaqab x Majalis) del criadero Los Alamos fue consagrado Campeón Macho Adulto por el quinto año consecutivo. En la misma categoría, GH Legendario (Legacy of Fame x Calliope D), elegante moro del criadero Gajualo, se llevó el título de Campeón Adulto Reservado y también del Mejor Macho Adulto nacido en el Ecuador. En la categoría Junior Macho el ganador fue SC Passport (DA Valentino x Vianna) seguido por su hermano SC Mujarej (DA Valentino x Vianna), ambos importados y de propiedad del criadero Santa Cecilia. Y en la categoría Potros, ganó GH Magnum Fakhir (GH Magnum Nice x Psytaniums Fire GH) del criadero Gajualo mientras que SC Shadid (Majik Of Marwan x RGA Koul Dawn) de Santa Cecilia se llevó el segundo puesto.

In the Show competition, the beautiful bay stallion Maarjan (Marwan Al Shaqab x Majalis) from Los Alamos Stud Farm was crowned Senior Male Champion for the 5th time in a row. In the same class, GH Legendario (Legacy of Fame x Calliope D), stylish grey stallion from Gajualo Stud Farm, was Reserved Champion and also Best Male Senior born in Ecuador. In the Junior Male class the winner was SC Passport (DA Valentino x Vianna) followed by his full brother SC Mujarej (DA Valentino x Vianna), both imported and owned by Santa Cecilia Stud Farm. The Colt class was won by GH Magnum Fakhir (GH Magnum Nice x Psytaniums Fire GH) from Gajualo while SC Shadid (Majik of Marwan x RGA Koul Dawn) from Santa Cecilia was Reserved Colt Champion.

Entre las hembras, MC Antonela (Maarjan x Ayishaa) fue nombrada Campeona Adulta. Con ésta victoria, consiguió la “Triple Crown”, premio supremo otorgado a los caballos nacidos en el país que hayan sido sucesivamente campeones potro, junior y adulto. Sin lugar a duda, esa espectacular yegua está siguiendo los pasos de su padre Maarjan, y tiene un futuro muy prometedor. MD Hibat Allah-ET (DA Valentino x Anastasiaa), criada por Medrano, consiguió el puesto de Campeona Adulta Reservada. En la categoría Junior Hembra, ganó SC Rezca (DA Valentino x Vianna), yegua muy refinada de propiedad del criadero Santa Cecilia. El premio de Campeona Junior Reservada fue atribuido a GH Mulatta (GH Magnum Nice x GH Dark Power) del criadero Gajualo. Finalmente, GH Magnum Baracah (GH Magnum Nice x GH Magnum Femme), también de Gajualo, fue nombrada Campeona Potra y SC Hadiyah (Aria Impresario x Vianna) de Santa Cecilia obtuvo el título de Campeona Potra Reservada.

In the mares’ classes, MC Antonela (Maarjan x Ayishaa) from Los Alamos was declared Senior Female Champion. With this victory, she received the “Triple Crown Award”, supreme trophy granted to the horses born in Ecuador and who have been crowned, successively, Champion Foal (or filly), Junior and Senior. There is no doubt that this wonderful mare will be following the steps of her father and has a promising future. MD Hibat Allah ET (DA Valentino x Anastasiaa) bred by Medrano, was Reserved Senior Champion. In the Junior Female class, the winner was the stylish SC Rezca (DA Valentino x Vianna) from Santa Cecilia, followed by GH Mulatta (GH Magnum Nice x GH Dark Power) from Gajualo. Finally, GH Magnum Baracah (GH Magnum Nice x GH Magnum Femme), from Gajualo was Champion Filly and SC Hadiyah (Aria Impresario x Vianna) from Santa Cecilia was Reserved Champion Filly. For their extremely good quality, the fillies classes were considered by Reinaldo da Rocha Leão as one of the highlights of the Championship.

Por primera vez en el Ecuador, se otorgó un premio para las Mejores Cabezas. Las yeguas MD Felisha (Freellance x MD Magnifica) y MD Hibat Allah ET (DA Valentino x Anastasiaa) ambas del criadero Medrano, ganaron las categorías Hembras, mientras que SC Arnab (Freellance x Vianna) del criadero Santa Cecilia ganó la categoría Machos.

For the first time in Ecuador was granted an award for Best Heads. The mares MD Felisha (Freellance x MD Magnifica) and MD Hibat Allah ET (DA Valentino x Anastasiaa) both of Medrano Stud Farm won in the Mare categories, while SC Arnab (Freellance x Vianna) from Santa Cecilia Stud Farm won in the Stallion category.

En las pruebas deportivas, se realizó por segunda vez una “Copa Arabísimo”, competencia de origen europeo que premia al caballo árabe que presenta todas las características de la raza, es decir, el tipo árabe, la funcionalidad y la docilidad. Para ganar la Copa y los $2000 de premios en efectivo, los doce caballos inscritos tuvieron que participar en cinco pruebas sucesivas: Ridden Classes, Carrera de Banderolas, Carrera de Barriles, Liberty y Prueba de Destreza. La competencia estuvo realmente ardua y el suspenso duró hasta terminar el segundo día. Finalmente, ganó la yegua MD Kimsacha (MD Kimosabi x MD Sasha) montada por Gustavo Bravo del criadero Medrano mientras que el semental negro Cazyque (Birzal x Em-Al-Sand) del criadero Georgia ocupó el segundo lugar y Sue LD (Padrons Pikaso JM x IN Saqqara) del criadero Pisabo, el tercero.

En el marco de la Copa Arabísimo, la prueba Ridden Classes benefició de un juzgamiento del más alto nivel en la persona de Jaime Morillo, juez FEI de adiestramiento. En la categoría Chagras – equivalente ecuatoriano del gaucho argentino-, se demostró la versatilidad del caballo árabe y su adaptación a la cultura nacional. Said HC (RA Evening Shade) del criadero Las Acacias y MD Kimsacha (MD Kimosabi x MD Sasha) de Medrano, ganadores respectivamente de las categorías Macho y Hembra, se lucieron con el atuendo local y supieron captar toda la atención del público de Sangolquí. En la categoría Ridden Classes Clásico, el semental moro MK Kitumbe II (Pluton x Nabielaah) ganó la prueba montado por Nathalie Weemaels, demostrando con su elegancia que la raza árabe se destaca también para pruebas de adiestramiento. Finalmente, en la prueba de destreza que combina saltos, barriles y banderolas, ganó la amazona Angela Merizalde de Cuenca, con el padrillo Yatir (MD Shamir x Novators Goddess) de propiedad del criadero La Portada.

In the Sport events, an "Arabísimo Cup" was performed for the second consecutive year. This competition of European origin rewards the Arabian horse which has all the characteristics of the breed, like the type, functionality and docility. To win the Cup and the US$ 2,000 award, the horses had to participate in five successive tests: Ridden Classes, Pole Bending, Barrel Racing, Jumping, Liberty and a Dexterity Test. The competition was really tough and suspense lasted until the end of the second day. Finally, the mare Kimsacha MD (MD Kimosabi x MD Sasha) from Medrano won the Cup ridden by Gustavo Bravo Medrano while the black stallion Cazyque (Birzal x Em-In-Sand) from Georgia Stud Farm ranked second and Sue LD (JM Pikaso Padrons x IN Saqqara) from Pisabo reached the third place.

Within the Arabísimo Cup, the Ridden Classes benefited from a judgment of the highest level in the person of Jaime Morillo, FEI dressage judge. The category Chagras– which is the Ecuadorian equivalent of Argentine’s gaucho or the US Cowboy -, showed the versatility of the Arabian horse and its adaptation to the national culture. Said HC (RA Evening Shade x Morascha HC) from Las Acacias and MD Kimsacha (MD Kimosabi x MD Sasha) from Medrano, winners respectively of the male and female classes, were particularly beautiful in their local outfit and could capture the attention of the local public. In the category Ridden Classes Classical, grey stallion MK Kitumbe II (Pluton x Nabielaah) won the class ridden by Nathalie Weemaels, demonstrating with its elegance that the Arabian breed is also good for dressage. Finally, the Dexterity class that combines jumping, barrel racing and pole bending was won by the stallion Yatir (MD Shamir x Novators Goddess) owned by La Portada Stud Farm and ridden by Angela Merizalde. According to Reinaldo da Rocha Leão, the Arabisimo Cup is one of the strengths of the Ecuadorian Championship as it shows all the versatility of the Arabian horse.

Fuera de las competencias, la Feria del Caballo Arabe del Ecuador abrió también un espacio para los más chiquitos, demostrando de ésta forma la docilidad y el carisma del caballo árabe, así como la relación muy especial que desarrolla con los niños. En el Desfile de Niños participaron los futuros campeones Maria Emilia Barahona de tan solo 2 años de edad montada en Sue LD, así como Alegría Cadena en Nerhu, HC Sofía Pérez en Cazyque y Tomás Pérez en MK Kristal. Por otra parte, el jinete Sebastian Guarderas animó al público demostrando la gran aptitud del caballo árabe para el rejoneo en un show con atuendo español y parijuela.

Finalmente, tanto la destacada presencia de José Alvés Filho y José Miguel Bulnes (Presidente Asociación Chilena de Criadores de Caballos Arabes), como de nuevos socios de la ACCAE y participantes a la Feria son una prueba del vigor e importante desarrollo de la raza árabe en el Ecuador, cuya excelente y creciente calidad fue demostrada, una vez más, en esta XVI Feria.

Out of exhibition the Arabian Horse National Championship of Ecuador also opened a space for young ones, demonstrating in this way the docility and charisma of the Arabian horse and the special relationship that develops with the children. In the Children’s Parade participated the future champions Maria Emilia Barahona of only 2 years old mounted on Sue LD; as well as Alegría Cadena on Nehru, HC Sofía Pérez on Cazyque and Tomás Peréz on MK Kristal. Moreover, the rider Sebastian Guarderas encouraged the audience showing great aptitude of the Arabian Horse in a bullfight show with Spanish attire.

Finally, both the important presence of José Alves Filho and José Miguel Bulnes (respectively presidents of the Brazilian and the Chilean Associations of Arabian Horse Breeders) as well as the presence of new members of the ACCAE and participants to the Championship show the strength and important development of the Arabian breed in Ecuador, whose excellent and growing quality was demonstrated, once again, during this XVI National Championship.
