Sheikh Rashid Juma Al Maktoum wins Wathba Challenge

Sheikh Rashid Juma Al Maktoum riding Sail, a 9 year-old grey gelding won the 120-km Watbha Challenge Endurance ride organized by the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival at the Emirates International Endurance Village in Al Wathba, Abu Dhabi on Saturday, November 11.

Sheikh Rashid on Sail and Abdulla Ghanim Al Marri on Adjar Du Manba crossed the finish line hand-in-hand with a second separating the two after the 4-stage 120-km event which was attended by HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai and Dubai Crown Prince HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, a few UAE Ambassadors, VIPs and over 800 guests from 88 countries who are here in the UAE capital for the grand finale of the Festival.

Sheikh Rashid Juma Dalmook representing M7 Stables was 6th after the first stage in a ride that attracted 148 riders. At the end of the second phase he led the field but in the penultimate phase he was second to Layla Mohammed Obaid Al Marzooqi from Al Wathba Stables on Tra Jet with Abdulla Ghanim in third place.

However in the final phase, Sheikh Rashid Juma and Abdulla Ghanim increased their pace to overtake Layla and the three finished in that order.

The winner completed the ride in 4 hours 20 minutes and 50 seconds at an average speed of 27.60 kmph.

 Mohammed Saeed Al Faresi on Doud took fourth place and all four riders were awarded a car each for their winning performances.

After receiving the winners and congratulating them, HH Sheikh Mohammed hailed their good display so early in the season. “It is good to see new horses perform well and most of the trainers still need time as this is just the start of the UAE season,” he said.

HH Sheikh Hamdan said the M7, F3 and MRM Stables are all concentrating on producing good riders and horses with a common plan. Commenting on the winners, he said, “Earlier you needed to give them instructions but now most of the riders are experienced and they k  now how to tackle the challenges during a competition.”

Ms. Lara Sawaya, Executive Director of the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival, General Manager of Wathba Stallions, Chairperson of the Int’l Federation of Horse Racing Academies (IFHRA) and Chairperson of Ladies & Apprentice Racing Committees in the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing Authorities (IFAHR) said the presence of HH Sheikh Mohammed and HH Sheikh Hamdan along with all the other VIP dignitaries added a lot of vale and status to the ride. “The presence of Their Highnesses always motivates the riders as well as the organizers and today our 800 guest also got a ringside view of our organizing capabilities and caliber of UAE riders. It was a great day,” Ms. Sawaya said.
