Abu Dhabi – Top Brazilian jockey Silvestre D’Souza made his presence felt after partnering Gabas Noor to victory in the 1400m Wathba Stud Farm Cup (For Private Owners Only) Handicap, the fifth race on the card.
Meanwhile, Manisha held on very strongly under Royston Ffrench to win the second race, the 2200m Purebred Arabians Madinat Zayed Handicap, the highlight of the 8th race-meeting at Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club on Sunday January 19.

The five-year-old daughter of Darike battled courageously when challenged by the mount of Richard Mullen, Okba, and the two horses went strike for strike in the last 100 yards to prevail by quarter a length on the line. Manisha registered 1.26.11 seconds which is about three seconds under the long standing record of the legend Alanudd (1998).

Royston Ffrench commented: “She’s a nice mare and in good form. She was always going well and won nicely under pressure.”

Baransky, ridden by Richard Mullen, made virtually all to win the 1600m TB Maiden, the only thoroughbreds event and final race on the card.

Early in the evening, Gerald Avranche partnered Simba Du Loup to land the 2200m Purebred Arabians Al Rahba Conditions in the colours of Ali Haddad from fast finishing Al Waqqad and behind them came King Sakabe.

Maharani got up under Adrian Nicholls to pipe early leader Djanet Monlau, Ted Durcan up, in a strong finish to win the 2200m Purebred Arabians Fillies and Mares Ajban Conditions and claim a double for the horses of His Highness the President and the Al Asayle handler Ernst Oertel.

“She came from a long way and picked up nicely and stayed on well,” said the winning jockey Adrian Nicholls.

Sam Hitchcott gave bottom weight Richlore everything to land the 1600m PA Al Raha Beach Handicap to complete a splendid treble for horses of His Highness the President Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and trainer Ernst Oertel who topped the trainers’ championship table with 24 winners two in front of defending champion Ali Rashid Al Raihe.
